Subject: Security Alerts

A) Several new viruses are in circulation at this time, the most notable of which are the NETSKY, MYDOOM and BEAGLE strains. Though each will attack your system in a different manner each virus will broadcast their presence on your system for the author(s) to take advantage of. For further information on these or any other viruses please proceed to Symantec's website (www.symantec.com)

Information on NETSKY may be found here:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.netsky.b@mm.html

Information on MYDOOM may be found here:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.mydoom.b@mm.html

Information on BEAGLE may be found here:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.beagle.b@mm.html

Protect yourself by installing a reputable antivirus program such as Norton Antivirus and ensuring that its virus definitions are kept up to date.

B) PHISHING attacks, in which a virus or website asks for personal information (such as credit card number, internet/email access information, etc.) are becoming more common. Please remember that no agency apart from your internet service provider (ISP) will ask for internet/email access information and your ISP will ask for it only to verify your identity when you place a call to them. Under no circumstances should you be required to give bank information to anyone and your credit card number should only be requested in the process of an internet purchase. If you have a PayPal account (a method of paying for products or services over the internet) you should be informed that one recent PHISHING attack posed as a PayPal account verification request. Always check such requests with the supposed source of the request.

C) Spyware is becoming ever more prevalent. Utilities such as HOTBAR, while appearing to be moderately useful, also spy on your internet habits and submit their findings to their authors. An excellent tool for removal of spyware from your system is SpyBot (available here: http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php).

Remember that ELM Computer Systems offers a full suite of security analyses and has had a great deal of experience in removing viruses and spyware. Please call us if you feel your system security has been compromised.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this or any other issue.
