Subject: Useful Utilities

The May ELM Bulletin began a series on improving efficiency of computer use by detailing many keyboard shortcuts available to users of the Microsoft Windows operating system. The current bulletin is the next in that series and will list some free utilities that either offer features not available in Windows or which address limitations with what is available in Windows.

While we at ELM Computer Systems have found these programs to be very useful on our systems we can neither guarantee that they will work without problems on all systems nor accept responsibility for any damage or lost data attributed to the installation of these programs.

CONTEXT - Although Windows is accompanied by a simple text editor, NOTEPAD, for quick editing of text files it is limited to editing a single file of limited size at a time. CONTEXT was designed for those occasions when multiple or larger text files must be edited, allowing the user to modify as many text files as desired. File size is limited only by the computer system's resources. Context highlighting is available for a variety of programming languages and HTML code. Download from http://www.context.cx/index.html.

DITTO - The Windows Clipboard is a useful tool but is somewhat limited by being able to recall only a single copy and paste operation. DITTO enhances the functionality of the Clipboard by allowing it to store multiple copy operations in any format. Windows' standard copy and paste hotkeys (CTRL-C and CTRL-V) retain their functionality but DITTO allows the user to also select which of the copied items to paste at any point. IRFANVIEW - Most computer users will at some point receive a CD, diskette or email containing critical information stored as an image file which Windows' default image viewer is unable to view. IRFANVIEW, with its ability to open most popular image file formats, allows you to view almost any image type with a simple interface that integrates very nicely with Windows and most image editing software. MULTIRES - There are occasions when the normal resolution of the computer monitor is less than ideal for the work at hand. MULTIRES is a utility which allows the computer user to quickly and easily change the resolution of the computer monitor to any resolution supported by the display adaptor.
