ELM Bulletin - October 23, 2008
Critical Windows Update KB958644
ELM received notice earlier today that Microsoft has released a security update it considers to be "critical" for Windows 2000, Windows XP & Windows Server 2003; and "important" for Windows Vista & Windows Server 2008. In Bulletin MS08-067, which describes the update, Microsoft states that:
"A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the Server service on Windows systems. The vulnerability is due to the service not properly handling specially crafted RPC requests. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system."
The Server service referred to in bulletin MS08-067 loads by default when Windows starts and is used to enable File and Printer Sharing between computers. Further information can be found in Bulletin MS08-067 on the Microsoft website.
Please note that once Update KB958644 has been installed you may be required to restart your computer. Please contact ELM if you use our Remote Server Management Services to arrange a time for us to install the update to your server with minimal impact on your operations.
If necessary, ELM can also install the update to any affected workstations. Alternatively, the update can be installed to affected workstations either through Automatic Updates or by following the appropriate links from Bulletin MS08-067. Please contact us if you require assistance.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this or any other issue.
Past issues of the ELM Bulletin are available from our website, feel free to forward them to anyone you wish.
