ELM Bulletin - May 29, 2009

The Boys of Summer

It’s a beautiful sunny day in spring and what would the mind of a Toronto techie turn to but baseball; arguably the greatest game in the world.

The Toronto Blue Jays have had an awesome start and are surely a team to watch, even after losing their last few series. If you’re cheering for other teams you’ve got to admit that until mid-May the Jays have been impressive. Whether they’re pennant contenders or not, we’re in for some entertaining baseball this summer.

So what could be better than baseball? Baseball AND computers! This month I’m going to take slight detour from the technical ELM Bulletins and discuss how you can enjoy baseball on your computer.

Baseball has always been a game easily enjoyed over the radio or television. When you just can’t make it to the stadium either alternative is an acceptable option. But in the Internet age there is the third option of the Major League Ball website: www.mlb.com.

As you can see from the screen capture above, mlb.com provides a wealth of information on every team in the majors (only the American League is shown in this example) in an easy to understand layout. Each column is fully customizable, so you can follow your favourite stats with very little effort. Everything appearing in blue is a clickable link that leads to the following additional features of the site:

Clicking on any team’s name takes you to that team’s website, where breaking news and player details are available.

Click on the entry for the “LAST GAME” and you are given a summary of that game, an inning-by-inning box score, photos and some highlights.

Follow the line for Texas (or Oakland) to the far right and you will see “LIVE” indicating that they are in a game at the time this bulletin is being written. Click on the “LIVE” link and you can follow the game in progress, getting even more game detail than you can over the radio (except for colour commentary, perhaps).

Also, if you don’t mind spending a little money, you can subscribe to additional services providing even more features that allow you to watch the game on your computer and enjoy a host of additional content.

If you’re a baseball fan, or you know someone who is, there is no better one-stop-shopping for your fix than www.mlb.com. Have a great weekend as you enjoy one of the greatest games on earth.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this or any other issue.
