Vista Service Pack 2
Since a number of our readers are "already" enjoying Windows Vista, in this month's ELM Bulletin I will discuss the recent availability of Vista Service Pack 2 and what you need to know before you install it.
Microsoft released Vista Service Pack 2 in late May. Like all other Windows updates, Service Pack 2 is available through Windows Automatic Update. Service Pack 2 can also be downloaded as a standalone installation from this location.
Service Pack 2 is a very large download (as much as 300Mb, depending on your update status), be sure to give yourself at least an hour to download and complete the installation.
Service Pack 2 brings many updates, improvements and fixes to Vista. Some of the more notable changes are listed below:
Many stability and performance improvements
Updates Windows Search to version 4.0, improving local search performance and accuracy
Updates Bluetooth to version 2.1, the most recent Bluetooth specification
Enables Windows Vista to write to Blu-Ray media in addition to CD and DVD media
Improves power management efficiency by about 10%
Over 700 bugs and security updates
Resolves various Vista stability issues
Before you install Service Pack 2 you need to know the following:
Service Pack 2 makes significant changes to the current Vista installation; do not install Service Pack 2 unless you have a current reliable backup of your system…just in case…
Service Pack 1 is a pre-requisite to installing Service Pack 2; if Service Pack 1 has not been installed you will not be able to install Service Pack 2
The download can exceed 300Mb, a high speed Internet connection is necessary
Installation of Service Pack 2 may require an hour or more
Your computer may be restarted several times as Service Pack 2 updates core system files
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this or any other issue.
