ELM Bulletin - November 16, 2009
Sending Images to Outlook Express
This weekend, after emailing pictures of my parent’s 50th anniversary celebration, I learned that not everyone received them. Which was bad, since some people just couldn’t be there. As it turned out, it was only users of Outlook Express who were affected; everyone else received the pictures just fine.
Problem? Not really, I had only forgotten to attach the pictures to a Plain Text email. Email programs usually send email as HTML as it allows great flexibility in formatting. However, when pictures are attached to an HTML email they frequently can’t be seen in Outlook Express. This is the result of one of the security features built into Outlook Express that can’t be disabled.
Every email program can also send email as Plain Text. The option to select between the two is usually found under the “Format” menu of your email program. Although Plain Text emails are not as pretty as HTML, they meet with far fewer security restrictions. Attach pictures to a Plain Text email and they’ll get through every time.
And that’s good; because, like all precious moments, memories of a 50th anniversary celebration are worth sharing.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this or any other issue.
