Performance Enhancing Tip # 4 – Restart the Computer
The past few ELM Bulletins presented a number of ways to improve computer performance. This month’s ELM Bulletin presents what could be the simplest method yet: Restart the Computer.
Windows XP and later versions have been designed to be able to run without restarting for extended periods of time, but it is still a good idea to restart your computer once a week or so. Restarting the computer releases memory that has been tied up by other applications, closes any applications that may not have closed completely and ends all pending tasks other than printer jobs. If your computer is a little slower than normal simply taking a few minutes for a restart could solve the problem.
As an alternative, if you’re a Monday to Friday type, you could turn off the computer on Friday evening and turn it on again on Monday morning; you’ll gain the benefit of restarting and you’ll use less electricity. (If you you need to restart your comptuer several times a day a detailed analysis is probably necessary.)
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this or any other issue.
